Ex-Tory Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi sacked over tax spat defects to Nigel Farage's Reform

Former Tory Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi who was sacked amid a row over his taxes has defected to Reform UK.

Appearing at a press conference alongside the Reform leader, Mr Zahawi said he had joined the right-wing outfit in a major blow to Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch.

The former MP and Boris Johnson loyalist said Britain was "drinking at the last chance saloon" and "really does need Nigel Farage as Prime Minister".

He added: "I've made my mind that the team that will deliver for this nation will be the team that Nigel will put together, and that's why I've decided that I'm joining Reform UK."

Mr Zahawi was sacked as Tory chairman by ex-PM Rishi Sunak in 2023 for a "serious breach" of the ministerial code amid a major row over his tax affairs.

The top minister had come under intense pressure after it emerged that he had settled a multi-million tax dispute - including a penalty - with HMRC while he was Chancellor last summer.
