Actress Sheila Bernette has died at the age of 94.

She played Sister Delaney in Coronation Street in the early 1970s, where her character helped treat Weatherfield legend Elsie Tanner after being hit by a taxi. She also appeared in the long-running BBC variety show Good Old Days from 1968 to 1983.

A statement shared by the Royal Variety Charity read: "Sheila will be very much missed by many of those who worked with her and those from the wider theatrical family."

Fellow actor Peter Kosta has paid tribute to his "very good friend", dubbing her "very funny" and "very feisty". He recalled their first meeting when they worked together on a play alongside Only Fools icon Sir David Jason.

"I was looking for digs, and Sheila said, 'Well, if you're clean, I have a spare room in my house'. She always supported me in everything that I wanted to do, and always came to see me in everything I did, whenever she could. I have extremely fond memories of her."

Squid Game: The Challenge star Lee Taylor wrote: "Very sad to hear of the death of actress Sheila Bernette, aged 94. A wonderful TV performer and so closely linked with @playerstheatre. Rest in peace, Sheila — thank you."

Sheila was one of the original practical jokers on the UK version of the comedy show Candid Camera. The star was also a singer on the BBC's prime-time light entertainment show, The Black and White Minstrel Show.

Bernette also performed at the 1970 Royal Variety Performance, where she was introduced by Leslie Crowther as Russian defector ballerina Natalia Nokemova. She performed The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.

CBBC viewers will remember her in Hotel Trubble as Mrs Poshington, a hotel guest who never leaves. She had the role from 2008 until 2011.

Her other TV appearances include The Queen's Nose, Two of a Kind, Butterflies, The Little and Large Show, and Agony Again. She worked with the likes of comics Morecambe and Wise, Dick Emery, and Tommy Cooper.

Her film credits include Car Trouble (1986), Three For All (1975) and Driving Aphrodite (2009). The latter, her final film role, was also known as My Life in Ruins.
