About 8.30am on Monday, emergency services were called to a home on Nipper St in Homebush, following reports of an alleged domestic violence incident.
Officers forced entry into a unit block and arrested a 52-year-old man.
During the arrest, OC spray was deployed by officers to bring the man under control.
Police say the man suffered a medical episode a short time later.
He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition.
Police were advised the man died in hospital about 8.30pm on Monday.
A crime scene has been established and a critical incident team is investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
The investigation will be subject of an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and oversight by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
